Optical Media Recovery

Data loss can occur on optical media such as CD, CD-R/RW and DVD, for many reasons. Most commonly, this is due to physical problems such as scratches and smears amongst others. If you are experiencing read errors or have scratches on your optical media which prevent you from reading the content of the optical disk, then call us for assistance. We can read data from optical media with errors as well as resurface your media if it suffers from severe scratches.

Compact Disks also known as CD’s are constructed of several layers:

  • 1 Polycarbonate Plastic

Each disc starts as a simple disc of clear polycarbonate plastic. Data is stamped onto the top of this layer creating dips and gaps.

  • 2 Reflective Foil

Next a thin foil layer of silver, gold or copper is applied to the data side of the polycarbonate disc. It is this layer that reflects the laser back to the player and allows the disc to be read.

  • 3 Lacquer

Lacquer is applied the back of the foil layer and spun at high speed creating a barrier to prevent oxidization and protect the foil from the elements.

  • 4 Graphics Layer

a graphics layer is screen printed onto the lacquer layer for marketing, and identification purposes and adds additional protection.

DVD’s are constructed in similar fashion, but contain additional polycarbonate layers above the lacquer layer.
